Protecting Food Cultural Biodiversity: From Theory to Practice. Challenging the Geographical Indications and the Slow Food Models

A global expansion in public and private initiatives seeks to strengthen the link between traditional products sustainable development by creating a niche market for these products. Relevant examples are Geographical Indications Slow Food Presidia models. This paper compares both types of Origin Schemes (OFS) disclose main commonalities differences their institutionalization, complex outcomes on cultural biodiversity (CB), which is major concern sustainability rural communities. We used underpinning knowledge dynamics as an analytical lens through cross-comparison ethnographic findings collected four case studies origin cheeses located France, Italy Morocco. Our suggest that OFS have high potential defend CB because collective context-dependent approaches. argue practices mobilized result power relations confrontations among local actors, show how identified tensions different forms differently shape food culture, technique, perceptions, representations. In conclusion, institutional approaches, compared this analysis six effective ways CB, facilitating trajectory toward development.
